3 AI Mistakes That Can Damage Your Client Relationships
While AI offers incredible opportunities for enhancing client experience, it can also damage client relationships when used incorrectly. In our recent post about leveraging AI for client experience, we covered the advantages. Today, we’re talking about the pitfalls.
These three critical AI mistakes can hurt your client relationships, but they’re completely avoidable when you know what to watch for.
Mistake #1: Letting AI Replace Your Personal Touch
The temptation: Using AI to completely handle client support and communication, thinking it will save time and create consistency.
This feels logical, right? AI never gets tired, never has a bad day, and can respond instantly 24/7. Why wouldn’t you want that level of “perfect” customer service?
Why this backfires: Clients can tell when they’re not getting genuine human attention, and they don’t appreciate being treated like just another ticket in the system.
The real impact on clients:
When AI completely replaces human touchpoints, several problematic things happen. Clients start to feel like just another number rather than valued individuals. Complex issues get misunderstood or dismissed because AI lacks the nuance to recognize when a situation requires creative problem-solving. Emotional needs go completely unmet because AI can’t provide genuine empathy or comfort during difficult moments.
Perhaps most damaging, trust erodes when clients realize there’s no human oversight or involvement in their experience.
The Rick-roll story that proves this point:
Lindy, a business owner, implemented an AI chatbot to help customers find tutorial videos. The system was supposed to direct users to relevant help content when they asked questions about using her platform.
Sounds reasonable, right?
Well, when the AI couldn’t find appropriate tutorial videos, it would default to… Rick-rolling customers. Yes, sending them links to the “Never Gonna Give You Up” music video instead of actual help.
While this might sound funny in hindsight, imagine being a frustrated customer trying to solve a problem and getting pranked by a chatbot instead of receiving actual support.

Mistake #2: Trusting AI to Provide Accurate Information
The temptation: Assuming AI chatbots and automated systems will always provide correct, helpful information to your clients.
This seems like it should be a given, right? We expect technology to be accurate and reliable. But AI systems are only as good as their training data and programming, and they can confidently deliver completely incorrect information.
Why this backfires: When AI provides inaccurate information, it doesn’t just fail to help—it actively creates more problems and frustration for your clients.
My ThriveCart experience:
I recently experienced this firsthand when trying to get help with ThriveCart’s affiliate manager feature. I asked their chatbot a specific question about functionality, and it confidently provided detailed step-by-step instructions for accomplishing what I wanted to do.
The AI even told me exactly where to click and which menus to navigate to achieve my goal.
The problem? The information was completely wrong.
Not only were the features it described non-existent, but some of the locations it told me to click didn’t even exist in the platform. I spent more time “arguing” with the chatbot, trying to explain that the steps it was giving me were impossible, than I would have spent if I could have just talked to a human directly.
My blood pressure was rising, my frustration was mounting, and I was getting further away from solving my actual problem with each exchange.
The real impact on clients:
When AI provides inaccurate information, several damaging things happen:
- Wasted time and increased frustration as clients try to follow impossible instructions
- Erosion of trust in your brand’s competence and reliability
- Amplified problems as clients get more confused and frustrated
- Lost confidence in your systems and processes
Even worse, clients often blame themselves initially, thinking they’re doing something wrong when they can’t follow the AI’s instructions. This creates unnecessary stress and self-doubt.

Mistake #3: Set-and-Forget Automation
The temptation: Setting up automated client communications and never reviewing or updating them.
Automation feels like the ultimate efficiency hack. Set it up once, and it runs perfectly forever, right? Unfortunately, this “set it and forget it” approach often leads to communications that feel tone-deaf, inappropriate, or completely disconnected from your brand.
Why this backfires: Automated systems can send inappropriate, off-brand, or contextually wrong messages that damage relationships rather than nurture them.
The spa story that illustrates this perfectly:
A local spa set up automated reminder texts for various services, including waxing appointments. Instead of simple, professional reminders, their system was sending messages that joked about “hairy legs being spotted around town.”
While someone might have thought this was funny when setting it up, imagine receiving this message:
- If you were getting waxed for medical reasons
- If you were dealing with body image issues
- If you were a first-time client already nervous about the service
- If you simply preferred professional, straightforward communication
What was intended as playful became potentially offensive and alienating.
The real impact on clients:
Poorly managed automation creates several serious problems:
- Offensive or inappropriate messaging that damages relationships and drives clients away
- Generic communications that feel impersonal and show lack of attention to detail
- Brand misalignment that confuses clients about who you are and what you stand for
- Lost opportunities for meaningful connection and relationship building
Key takeaway: Good automation should feel intentional and personal, not lazy or careless.

The Human-AI Balance That Actually Works
After seeing these mistakes play out across different businesses, here’s what I’ve learned: AI enhances human capability. It doesn’t replace human judgment.
What should stay human:
The irreplaceable human elements of client experience include: Complex problem-solving that requires creativity and context. Emotional support and empathy during difficult moments. Strategic decision-making that considers nuanced client needs. Brand voice and values alignment that reflects your authentic personality and approach.
What AI can enhance:
AI excels at: Research and analysis that informs your decisions. Draft communications that you review and personalize before sending. Process optimization ideas based on data patterns. Pattern recognition in client feedback that helps you identify trends and opportunities.
The result: When you get this balance right, clients experience the best of both worlds: AI-enhanced efficiency combined with genuine human care and attention.
They get: Faster responses that are still thoughtful. More thorough research that’s filtered through your expertise. Consistent processes that still feel personal. Advanced capabilities that are guided by human wisdom and judgment.

Creating AI That Serves Your Clients (Not Your Convenience)
The key to using AI successfully in client experience isn’t about finding ways to do less work. It’s about finding ways to serve your clients better.
Before implementing any AI solution, ask yourself:
- Does this enhance the human experience or replace it?
- Will clients feel more understood and supported, or more frustrated?
- Am I using this to improve service quality or just reduce my workload?
- What happens when this AI system fails or provides incorrect information?
Remember: Your clients are investing in relationships with humans, not robots. They want your expertise, judgment, and genuine care, enhanced by technology, not replaced by it.

Ready to Enhance (Not Replace) Your Client Experience?
AI is a powerful tool for enhancing client experience, but it requires thoughtful implementation and ongoing oversight. The goal isn’t to remove yourself from client relationships. It’s to show up more prepared, informed, and capable of providing exceptional service.
